Negombo is a fishing town in the west coast of the tropical paradise Sri Lanka, approximately thirty seven kilometers north of the capital city of Colombo. Located on the shores of the Negombo lagoon the town is just seven kilometers away from the international airport.

As in the case with many coastal towns in Sri Lanka, Negombo too has been under the influence of the Portuguese, the Dutch and the English. There are many archeological remnants giving proof to this fact. Many of the Roman Catholic churches commonly seen around Negombo area are built during the days of the Portuguese rule and are still worshipped by the predominant Catholics living in the area.

The Dutch Fort, the hundred kilometers long Dutch canal which runs through the town, the administrative buildings are some of the architectural wonders gifted by the Dutch to the people of Negombo.

Apart from the archeological importance, Negombo is particularly popular for their sunny beach stretch and the sea. Providing ample opportunities for recreation, Negombo has become one of the popular tourist attractions in Sri Lanka among tourists and locals alike. The many beach resorts found along the beach promote a variety of water sports for their guests to take part in.

A sight not to be missed while in Negombo is the return of the fisher folk from sea at dawn with their catch in the outrigger sail boats or 'the oruwas'. It is also the best time to purchase varieties of fresh fish. Negombo also boasts of the second largest fish market in Sri Lanka - the Llelama where an assortment of fish can be purchased at an affordable price.

The Negombo lagoon is famous for providing delicious prawns and crabs which are frequently served in almost all the resorts in the area. The lagoon is also one of the main sources of income for the folk living in Negombo.

Another popular feature in Negombo is the availability of health resorts for people in search of relaxation and rejuvenation through Ayurvedic treatments. One can stay at one of the Negombo health resorts such as Jetwing Ayurvedic Pavilions, famous for having an array of unique treatments and have an amazing experience.
